This year is 15th anniversary of Kryly Khalopa theater.
We started from youth idealism, radical political position and decision to do actual, critical art. We wrote manifestos, would change the world and quoted Subcomandante Marcos, Guy Debord and the Walt Whitman…
We were studying to make the theatre not in the institutions, but from the people who were thinking this way and whose are called today the legends of theater alternative. We created 11 performances, travelled from Murmansk to Montpellier, participated in more than 40 festivals, organized more than 15 street actions and happenings, 6 big festivals and many other events: exhibitions, lectures, meetings, workshops etc., organized the first in Belarus internet-translation of the performance, worked with the children and patients of neuropsychiatric clinics, and also the opening of KX space and gallery. We were badly battered over the years by movings, changing of names, hassles of existence in official Houses of Culture, loss of actors, inner crisis of the group, censorship, commissions, bans of the last performances and depressions because of disability of playing in Brest and Belarus…
Not performing in Belarus during 3 years, we constantly hear the questions: when? everybody is waiting… are you still alive? … We realize that lots of todays’ visitors of KX space didn’t see any performance and don’t know any of the performances and don’t know us as a theatre. Some remember us only as Free Theatre. Some tell that we radically influenced on his/her world view…
We decided that it’s time to clear the wings (“kryly”), to make a restart and rethink our own experience. All year we plan in form of presentations, exhibitions, performances, meetings to show what we were doing during 15 years. And that, what we can call without any confusion, the history of Belarusian theatre.
We start our 15th anniversary from the hash tag action “Photo Kryly Khalopa”. We want to look at ourselves from the spectators’ position, to see unusual angles and remember how it was during 15 years. On the 8th of March is our official Birthday, we invite everyone on the opening of the exhibition of the posters of Brest Free Theater and theater Kryly Khalopa, and also on the meeting with us, as with the collective of the theater. Where you can come with questions, greetings and presents.
