“The Trial” by Franz Kafka’s texts

“The Trial” by Franz Kafka’s texts

The main themes of “The Trial” are the sense of guilty, power and a powerless person. Kafka described with extremely precision as the sense of guilty expand from the indignation to the total recognition and readiness for the death punishment.
The main idea of Kafka’s creative work is reaction to absolute power. The power starts from father’s absolute authority over forceless son and finishes by the endless power of the system over the small inhabitant.
Kafka’s space is struck with fault, guilty of everyone, regardless of the one who and how feels own fault. Non-recognition of fault is the most grievous of crimes, after all it queries the force of Law.
Except “The Trial”, “The Judgment “, diaries and Kafka’s letters, including “The Letter To Father”, “The Castle” and “America” as motives were included into the performance.
THE AESTHETICS
From German expressionism we took monochrome and over emotionality of acting. Buffoonery theatre and clownery helped us to create prosecutors’ characters, which are half-clowns, half-executioners. The characters took from the Oriental theatre the out-of-day, expressive body. Dadaist`s and Magritte humor appeared because from the very beginning we decided to work with Kafka with the help of laugh. The love to Brecht theatre determined the appearing of zongs about Joseph K. unfortunate destiny and “exits” of actors from the body of characters into themselves.
THE HISTORY OF CREATION
Theatre «Kryly Halopa» during 5 years engaged in researching of the theatre anthropology. This work started after the participating in International School of Theatre Anthropology in Wroclaw in 2005 and studying in Odin Teatret (Denmark) in 2007.

We researched the process of creating the out-of-everyday body, the body which reflects another way of thinking, the leaving of the everyday behavior and the energy on the stage. The researches were based on the traditions of the Oriental (Bali theatre, Kabuki), the traditional arts of fight (the Indian Kalaripayattu, the Japanese Samurai Technique), the European theatre traditions (pantomime, clownery), voice techniques (overtone singing, traditional songs).

The results of this work are the few street performances («Maleficium», «TO RINGFLY»). But the brightest and the most perfect result of our researches is the performance “The Trial” by F. Kafka, which took part in the international theatre festivals “Crossroads” in Lodz, “Wioska teatralna” (Wegajty, Poland), «Wejrzenia na Wschod” (Mashewo, Poland), festival of modern art “Dakh-9” (Мinsk). Performing “The Trial” the theatre won the prize as the best amateur theatre at the international theatre festival “Drabyna” in Lviv in 2010.

We created the original and uncommon method of the building of the characters’ physicality. We found the way of the incarnation the Kafka’s texts to the body. As a result the characters appeared and they had the extraordinary expressive way of moving, energy. The spectators often regard them as hieroglyphs (as in the Oriental theatre).
